The other day, as I was browsing the net; came across a splendid video of Indian cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle. I found it very interesting & inspiring. I have penned it down for all my dear friends.
The point being what is required to get you to the top 10%. Is it Talent? Talent has put you in top 10%... but then to reach the top 1% i.e. pinnacle of success what is the most vital requirement. Not Talent!!! Talent has done its part. Now everyone in that top 10% have the same talent. So what drives us towards excellence. Excellence is not about talent alone. Beyond a certain level, Ability & Talent are the most USELESS virtues to posses. Talent breeds an ego and talent never solves any problem beyond a point. In Australian army, when building an elite core team, the track record of soldiers are checked. If the soldier has never failed then he is not picked. WHY?? Can the soldier, who has marched to success with his ability alone; take correct decisions when faced with adversary and failures. The elite team is formed out of people who have failed and have bounced back...thats where attitude matters. Attitude is far more important than talent. Tendulkar, the legendary cricketer, has played 55 games without a break @ the age of 14. At a stretch!! Continuous!! 55 days!!!!! He practices for 2 hours, play a game n then practices again for 2 more hours. He falls asleep on dining table. He does it for straight 55 days. Its not Talent but its Attitude. So Attitude and Passion counts far more than ability. Ability opens the first door, it might open the second..but its never gonna open the last door for YOU.
Really inspiring..... gud one dude!!!
ReplyDeletenow, if i agree wit you, we did both be wrong!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHP envy is just like the "Ability"...It can put you in top 10%...and iMAC is just like "Attitude"...It will you in top 1%...But if you buy "iMAC + Ninja 250R" will you put to number 1 spot...choice is yours... :)
ReplyDelete@Dibya: Thanks buddy :)
ReplyDelete@Sreeshob: You 'll always be wrong, even if you don't agree with me.
@Hemant: Good comparisons.... Now You have forced me to give a damn thought about it !!!!!
Nice post Nik...
ReplyDeleteJust to comment in this line
"Beyond a certain level, Ability & Talent are the most USELESS virtues to posses", i must say Ability and Talent can never be USELESS at any point of time. Attitude is just an add on to Talent and Ability to reach the Top 10% or Top 1%....
A long way to go....
Hi Elley...
ReplyDeleteNice to see ur comments finally :)
I agree with you. But then why i wrote is because... Talent has taken you already to top 10%, after that Attitude is ur USP. You know Vinod Kambli, the most TALENTED cricketer of 90s. When Courtney Walsh bounced him in 1994 Test match in Bombay, he has no answer to the bouncers. After that match, he never played a test. He was only 22 at that time. Till that time Talent has solved all the problems but where he missed out is on Attitude. So Talent & Ability are required... but till a point, then attitude takes over. If you have talent and ability now it will still be there in future... but attitude is what keeps shifting sides.
But you are right, all three should go hand in hand :)
Buddy, was just showing u a bit of attitude. :)
ReplyDeleteVery well written blog Nikunj..:)
ReplyDeleteCouple of months back got a mail on attitude...wanna share it here..
"if the english alphabets A,B,C...r numbered serially as 1,2,3...,then
A + T + T + I + T + U + D + E = 1 + 20 + 20 + 9 + 20 + 21 + 4 + 5 = 100%..":)
Good one..is nt it??
Attitude may not be the one & only factor to be successful, but yes it makes a difference.
Talent can make u a star, but it's "attitude + talent" which makes a super star.
The example on Sachin Tendulkar which u have added here, is well fitted to the subject line.
Anu... a point well put forward, ATTITUDE = 100%
ReplyDeleteYes , its attitude only . 'Sincerity'(Nishtha in Hindi) is a positive attitude which is the only key to excel .
ReplyDeleteI am still trying to find the correct meaning of 'being sincere' .
